After many, many layers of paint something begins to emerge. The ethereal lady that first appeared as a ghostly figure has become a proud bowsprit figurehead.

In her whaleboned dress, she bravely advances before the ship. calming the writhing sea monsters in the deep blue ocean beneath her. Her dress, made up of sea monsters and the sea, makes her part of the thing she seeks to tame.

The monsters are inspired by those depicted on mediatal charts of the sea. Hinted by the addition of the North Star and the compass.

There is a lot of symbolism here about how women have been seen and portrayed in society and art. Mermaids luring sailors to their death whilst the feminine figurehead a charm to calm the sea, and yet it was thought unlucky to have a female onboard...

I create these paintings by adding layer, upon layer of paint. I use many different techniques to apply the paint and as well as scratching down with various tools to reveal layers underneath.
